We have stringent audit processes that we enforce throughout our supply chain as well as require that our suppliers’ employment practices meet our Vendor Code of Conduct. Our code of conduct prohibits forced labor/slavery as well as establishing our expectations for employment, workplace practices, compensation and benefits, discrimination, health and safety. We are continuously working towards making the safeguards of our supply chain more robust and ensuring compliance to our standards.

By working directly with farmers when possible, we believe we can improve the supply and quality of our ingredients, reduce environmental impacts and play a role in building healthier communities all across the globe. We strive to do our part in improving farming practices to preserve natural ecosystems and ensure a healthy global farming system for generations to come. At the same time, we recognize that agriculture is a local operation, each of which presents different opportunities and challenges when promoting sustainable agricultural practices.

We recognize the vital importance of sustainable fishing - both commercially and ecologically. Our long-term goal is to work with the industry to move to more sustainable practices worldwide including sourcing our seafood from independently certified sustainable fisheries, supporting protected areas and maintaining healthy and sustainable fish stocks.

Palm oil is used as an ingredient in a small number of Subway® products due to its desired baking / functional characteristics and because it supports our initiative to eliminate added Trans fats. We believe the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) is the primary sustainability standard for palm oil products and have been sourcing RSPO certified palm oil for Subway products in Europe since 2015.

Subway seeks to transition our entire supply chain to egg procurement practices with improved animal welfare outcomes.*

In Europe, the Middle East countries where we operate, Australia, and New Zealand, 100% of the eggs we purchase are either free-range or cage-free.

• In 2021, we procured nearly 6.5 million eggs from these improved welfare outcome systems in these regions, which is 800,000 more than we procured in 2020 increasing our impact year over year.
• In Europe, Subway has been sourcing free-range eggs since 2013, winning “Good Egg Awards” from Compassion in World Farming (CIWF).
• In the Middle East, we have been sourcing 100% free-range eggs since 2015 across United Arab Emirates and Oman.
• In Australia, we have been sourcing cage-free eggs since 2014.

We are committed to sourcing 100% cage-free eggs where feasible by the end of 2025.

• Across North and South America in 2021, we procured approximately 11 million cage-free eggs, an increase of about 1.3 million cage-free eggs when compared to our 2020 procurement totals in these regions.

In regions where supply is limited, we are committed to working with the industry and suppliers to find solutions to source cage-free or free-range eggs.

In the U.S. and in line with World Health Organization guidance, our sandwiches, wraps, and salads are served only with chicken raised without antibiotics important to human health.

By 2024, Subway is committed to implementing the following changes for our US chicken products and will demonstrate compliance via third party auditing.

• Source only chickens that are given more space, with a maximum stocking density of 6 lbs/sq. foot, per GAP’s standards;
• Ensure all chickens sourced have an improved environment, including litter, lighting and enrichment, per GAP’s standards;
• Source only chickens that are more humanely processed, through a multi-step, controlled-atmosphere system.
• And by 2026, source only chicken breeds that are approved by Global Animal Partnership (GAP) as having higher welfare outcomes.

Subway® recognizes the importance of sow and piglet welfare in our pork supply chain, and we support sow husbandry and housing approaches that create improved animal welfare outcomes. We have completely phased out of gestation crates in our European supply chain, and we are actively engaging with our US suppliers to evaluate sow housing approaches that improve welfare while maintaining commercially viable pricing.

Subway® seeks to transition our entire global dairy supply chain to be free of the supplemental growth hormone, rBST, and this goal has been accomplished in the US.
